The Portable Document Format is the most popular file format for publishing POD books.

Portable Document Format (PDF) is an electronic file format developed by Adobe Systems. PDF is the most popular file format for publishing Print-On-Demand books (POD). The most prominent features of PDF files are: 1. portability, 2. compact storage, 3.the ability to maintain the original format of a document, and 4. security.

Portability means that a document is viewable on many different operating systems. This is made possible by the use of a free viewer (Adobe Reader) supplied by Adobe Systems. This cross platform portability means that documents can be widely disseminated.

Compact storage is always important, but nowhere is it more important than in the publishing industry. I predict that mainstream publishers, as well as self-publishers, will use improved Print-On-Demand (POD) printing because it saves on warehouse and distribution expenses.

POD also eliminates the financially disastrous tradition of bookstores and distributors returning unsold books to the publisher. Inexpensive storage and compact files are the corner stones of a new publishing reality.

Another reason for the popularity of Portable Document Format files is the ability to maintain the format of the original document. Graphic artists and others put a lot of effort to get a document to look just right. Without the stability of PDF files, documents would look different on different computers and from different printers.

As you can see, Portable Document Format files are well suited for Print-On-Demand publishers, and it is becoming increasingly easier to create PDF files. You have several options:

1. You can use Adobe Acrobat. This is an expensive program; however, if you are a professional writer, or if you author electronic documents, it may be worthwhile.

2. You can purchase an inexpensive program, such as novaPDF. I used this program to convert The Misadventures of Russell Quigley from Microsoft Word to PDF without a hitch.

3. You can subscribe to Adobe Acrobat at https://createpdf.adobe.com/. A subscription costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. It is available only in the U.S. and Canada.

4. If you publish with Lulu.com, they will convert your Microsoft Word file to the Portable Document Format (PDF) for free. You can use your PDF file from Lulu.com to publish on CreateSpace.com. Just be sure to use different ISBNs on each Website. Be sure to include your ISBN on the copyright page, even if you have to create a new PDF file.
